The Phoenix Suns, especially Amare Stoudemire, took a lot of heat for the way they played in Game 1 and Game 2 of the 2010 Western Conference Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers. In Game 3, the Suns showed their home fans that the series isn’t over. With Stoudemire leading the way with 42 points and 11 rebounds, the Suns slammed the Lakers by a final score of 118-109.
In the first two games, the Lakers couldn’t be stopped offensively. To slow the Los Angeles, Phoenix coach Alvin Gentry used a zone defense that forced the Lakers to shoot from the outside. After the Lakers hit only 9-of-32 three-pointers, the plan worked to perfection.
Stoudemire got help from starting center Robin Lopez, who had 20 points and made eight of ten field goal attempts. Jason Richardson chipped in with 19 points, while Steve Nash had 17 points and 15 assists.
Kobe Bryant had a monster game of 36 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds for L.A. but he simply didn’t get enough help. Pau Gasol and Derek Fisher played well but literally everyone else on the Lakers struggled.
The Western Conference Finals are now 2-1 and the Suns can tie the series in Game 4 on Tuesday.
