These are not your Daddy’s Atlanta Hawks with high flying Dominique Wilkins putting on a one man show, but never getting them to the promised land of NBA titles. No, these are the modern Atlanta Hawks where it is hard to even pick out the MVP for the team.
Q: Who’s the MVP so far?
JJ: I don’t really have one. I just think collectively as a team, we’ve been great. I don’t think that there’s been one guy who’s been so dominant. I think it’s been collectively as a group.
DW: Hard to say right now. You can’t say one guy is the MVP right now because you have so many guys who are playing well.
SH: Oh, boy, I’d probably say [Mike] Bibby. You just feel good when he’s on the floor. Mostly, you’d think Joe [Johnson], but [Bibby] is the glue. Even if he has trouble shooting or whatever, or if he’s hobbling around, I just feel good when he’s there. To me, maybe he’s an MIP — most important player.
DD: Josh Smith, and I cannot say that strongly enough. Joe Johnson is the alpha dog. Jamal Crawford has been a nice addition, Al Horford certainly improved his game, but Josh Smith’s defense, rebounding and effort have already been worth at least four wins.

The Hawks are right on the tails of the Orlando Magic and Dwight Howard. Orlando is 22 – 8 and Atlanta is 20 – 8. You can’t get much closer than that. The Hawks are sitting at the fourth seed for the NBA playoffs right now with a 4 and a half game lead on Division rival Miami and 7 games ahead of Toronto and Milwaukee. All 3 of those teams have some serious issues and most likely will fall further behind if the Hawks keep up their current winning pace.
Al Horford and Josh Smith are winning and having a good time
The Atlanta team is loaded with talent like All Star Joe Johnson, Mike Bibby, Josh Smith, Al Horford, Joe Smith, and Marvin Williams. Al Horford prepped just a few miles from where your intrepid author lives and just exploded on the college scene and continues to improve in the NBA as evidenced by his 25 points and 19 rebounds in defeating the Indiana Pacers Saturday night as reported by the AP.
The Atlanta Hawks are here to stay for years to come and it will be interesting to see how quickly other NBA fans catch on to that. Dominique already knows it by the way.
